Before I begin, I have to apologize for the tardiness of this review. As many you know I launched a contest a couple weeks ago, and Dan was the winner. I must say once school starts, I barely have enough time to blog. Sorry Dan for the late review! Well without further interruptions here is the review of Dcr Blogs.

Who exactly is Dan?

As you look around the site and click the about page, you are given a lengthy autobiography of Dan. To summarize it, Dan is a published freelance writer that has had over twenty years of computer experience beginning with the Apple II. He also has a wide array of interests from history to psychology. I am an avid reader of his blog, so I know quite a few things about him that he didn’t include in his autobiography. He is a science fiction fanatic and is also a skilled photographer.

What DCR Blogs is About
DCR blogs is a blog that features a lot of different things. I mean I have read his blog for quite awhile, and I’m not sure exactly what the blog is about. So instead, I will give you a quote from Dan himself describing his blog, “What you will see here is stuff on blogging (including blogging in general as well as monetization issues and so on), technology, nature and antiques.” One thing I can tell you is that Dan does get off topic a lot. This of course isn’t always a bad thing. In a recent post he talked about how he was making a lot of salsa. He also likes to show off his photographic talent once in awhile by showing a picture or two.
Probably what Dan is most well known for is his Viral Link stories. He basically gets a group of links and makes stories out of them. Creative eh?

DCR Blog’s Theme
DCR blog has a very distinctive and clean theme. The only image is a cartoon image of Dan which is a good picture selection for the website since the website features a lot of Dan’s thoughts. I will say that the header could be more attractive though.

Dan’s Creativity
From reading his blog for quite awhile now, I have noticed that Dan is very creative and original. This is shown with his creative take on Viral Links and putting them in story form. Dan also has quite a sense of humor. On the side you’ll notice that he actually records how much money he gets from spam. That made me laugh when I saw that for the first time.

Monetization
Although DCR blogs is a strong blog, it has not made much money. So far, it has only made money off of donations through his soda fund. I suggest to Dan that he get some Adsense, Kontera, Text Ad links, and Auction Ads. He seems to be serious about making money off of his blog, so the next step would be putting some ads up.

Conclusion
Dan runs a pretty nice blog with a pretty solid theme and posts. He has some great ideas and is very creative. The only thing he needs to do is to get some ads up, and he’ll be making money online in no time.

Again sorry Dan for the delay.

At first glance at Dan Blogs, you are greeted by a random cartoon version of Dan. It may not seem obvious, but the picture is a perfect for the website, because that’s exactly what the site is… random.
There have been many successful blogs that don’t have a niche: Michael Kwan, Stephen Fung, Ed Lau, and even John Chow gets off topic a lot. I remember John Chow wrote about bad ice cream once. That’s as random as it gets. In Dan Blogs, he blogs about everything from science fiction to showing off his photographic talents. In a recent post though, he promises to be more on topic, “So, henceforth, I hope and plan to refrain from straying off-course. What you will see here is stuff on blogging (including blogging in general as well as monetization issues and so on), technology, nature and antiques.”
Only time will show if he keeps his promise. All in all though, I enjoy reading his posts even if they are random. His voice really shows through in his writing, and I can tell he means business. The layout for Dan Blogs is very clean and besides the cartoon version of him, it doesn’t have any other graphics to distract the reader. However, I don’t see any Google Adsense Ads, Exo Click Ads, Pay per Post, or Text-Link Ads. I would suggest to Dan to sign up for some of these to do some serious monetizing.
Overall, I think that Dan Blogs is a great blog to visit. You’ll never know what he’ll blog, but it will keep you entertained. If Dan keeps doing what he’s doing, he’ll join the Successful Blogs Without A Niche list in no time.

However for those of you who don’t know him or his blog, let’s take a look.

Design: Overall, the template and layout is easy to read and clean. It’s also very organized with the tabs on top and easy to navigate through the site. The banner with the two cars is a plus, but there could be a better picture more related to the site. On top of that, the Google Ads are well placed. Also, he has the slogan “A Dot Com Mongul,” which is nice and creative. Overall, the design the awesome but could use another picture.

Blog Focus: The Blog Focus is helping you become as rich and famous as John Chow himself. He helps you make money online. This is a pretty nice focus, because everyone wants to become rich and famous these days. However, he also posts random videos and ramblings sometimes. That is a nice addition to the site, because money can get boring sometimes.

Writing Style: John Chow’s writing style is really unique. Through his writing, you can get to know his personality right away: a successful, caring, good humored, helping individual. After you read just one article, it actually feels like you’ve met the guy personally. He’s also succinct and to the point in his articles, not rambling on about this and that.

The Real John Chow: Besides having a very successful blog, John Chow also owns The TechZone, which has over 200,000 visitors a day. He lives in Vancouver, Canada and also has some daughters. One of them is Ashley, who like his big dad, has a website also at www.ashleychow.com. Who knows? Maybe she will become as successful as her big dad. John Chow is just one successful and smart guy.

Overall, John Chow’s site is everything it should be: helpful, reliable, and entertaining to read. Unlike the celebrities out there, it looks like famous bloggers are famous for a reason. If you haven’t already done so, go and check it out for yourself! I’m sure you’ll learn a thing or two from the Dot Com Mogul.
