Massive Blackout Occurs in Baghdad
Aug 4th, 2007 by Alex

BAGHDAD- A massive blackout has occurred in the city of Baghdad. Thousands of people are left without electricity. The cause has been found to be from a mix of insurgent attacks, fuel shortages, and higher demand for electricity. Whatever the reason, thousands are left stranded in the dark.
“We are now forced to sleep outside,†Hamza Khan, a father of three, commented. “Outside, there’s the moonlight, and it’s much cooler. However, we are more prone to robberies.â€
The massive blackout resembles Hurricane Katrina. Robbers are going all out on the civilians that choose to sleep outside. Hundreds of stores have shut down in fear of being robbed.
“To keep away the robbers, my brothers and I take turns watching with a steel rod. Usually, robbers are unarmed and go for the easiest targets. So far, our neighbors have been robbed but not us.†Akbar Hussein told reporters.
Authorities are not sure when electricity will be up and running again. Right now, electricians are working hard to return electricity. However, only a handful of people have electricity. This blackout is considered one of the worst in the world. While time goes by, chaos and havoc rule the streets of Baghdad.
“Everyday, there are a couple of corpses lying on the ground from lack of food. People are turning to robbers just to get the essentials, because almost all the markets and stores have closed. I don’t know how long I can last myself.†Munim Hashbab, 13, told reporters while taking care of all four of his younger brothers. His parents were trying to steal food for them to live.
In this time of crisis, The American Red Cross and other relief organizations are sending donations of food and water to the people. As the days drag on, only time will tell how many will survive.
