A Blog that Lies

NEW JERSEY- The United States is the home of the free, but it’s also home to a lot of weird hobbies including collecting books or coins. However, none are weirder than collecting old sneakers. The stench from Michael Goodenburg’s collection of old sneakers prompted authorities to search his house in fear of dead bodies. Neighbors were disturbed by the putrid smell and feared that there was someone dead.

“The stench was like rotten eggs mixed with methane,” Stacy Byers, a neighbor, said. “At first, we just ignored it, but it got so bad we could still smell it when we covered our nose. We feared for the worst when we contacted authorities.”

Police and animal control had to break into the lock door fearing for a pile of dead bodies or animals. Instead, they found Michael Goodenburg sleeping, and his collection of sneakers in his bedroom.

“I was shocked and relieved at the same time to say the least,” Pam Morris, a local deputy, commented. “The smell hit me like a stone, but to find out it was just a bunch of old sneakers relieved us all.”

Michael Goodenburg says he’s been collecting old sneakers ever since he can remember. He says that his old sneakers provided comfort and the sense of security when he was being teased at school. Today, he has over two hundred pairs of old sneakers.

“I have ones from all the way back in the 1920’s,” Michael Goodenburg says. “I naturally don’t wash them to preserve their smell, but now I’ll start washing them. I never realized how bad the smell was. I guess I just got used to it.”
