The Day Cardboard Was Edible
Jul 13th, 2007 by Alex
If you thought eating dogs or liver was bad here in China, you haven’t seen anything yet. I was on a vacation enjoying the spectacular culture in China. People burn there trash everyday, spit on the road, and had holes in the ground for toilets. You thought American culture was bad.
Despite all that, the vacation was a hit, because the food was awesome. Everywhere you went there were restaurants, and every one of them cooked authentic Chinese food. Well, pulling pranks is in the nature of a lot of Chinese people, and my tourist guy was full of it. Taury, my tourist guide pulled one prank I’ll never forget.
I remember the best prank I ever pulled was replacing coke with soy sauce at a local Chinese restaurant. This prank was so much worse. It was getting around noontime, and I was getting hungry.
“I think that’s enough sightseeing for one day, lets get something to eat.†I told my tourist guide.
“There’s a local restaurant serving the best baozi I ever tasted. Baozi is just like dumplings, and I know you like dumplings.â€
I agreed to eat there, and it was probably the worst decision of my life. I’ve made millions of decisions in my life, and this is definitely the worst. The price was relatively cheap only one American dollar for eight of them.
“Do you want some?†I said offering my tourist guide one after taking a bite.
“No, you can have it all, my American friend.â€
After taking the first bite, I decided these weren’t that bad after all. I was working on the last one, when my tourist guide spilled the beans.
“Do you want to know what they’re made of?â€
“Sure, I’m guessing meat and some sort of wrapping.â€
“I’ll tell you the secret ingredients, but you can’t tell anyone. They use cardboard mixed in with some chemicals with fatty meat.â€
After hearing those words, I spat out the baozi and started scraping my tongue. Those stingy Chinese people don’t want to spend money on real ingredients so they decide to use cardboard. My tourist guide showed my around the place and how they did it. The rest of the vacation went well, and I managed to slip some of that cardboard into his Ramen noodles.
